Agricultural Marketing Board in search of new strategic orientation
GIS – 21 August 2015: The Agricultural Marketing Board (AMB) organised a one-day strategic thinking session on the theme AMB: Moving To New Heights yesterday at Hennessy Hotel, Ebène.
In his address at the opening ceremony, the Minister of Agro Industry and Food Security, Mr Mahen Seeruttun, stated that the agricultural sector which has been the backbone of our economic development has a critical role to play for Mauritius in the future.
Our import bill, he underlined, is on the very high side and this involves the draining of foreign exchange reserves from our economy. We are today having more land available from the decline in the sugar sector. We are talking of food security issues, of food waste, of SMART agriculture, of a new potential in Africa, amongst others, the Minister added.
According to Mr Seeruttun, we are facing new challenges and doing more of the same or satisfying ourselves with the business as usual mode is no more a credible option. We need to venture into unchartered territories and find new avenues for this sector, he stressed. “This is the very the aim of this workshop: to decline a new vision for the AMB in the wake of new challenges and opportunities that the new landscape is shaping for this sector”, he said.
Over 60 persons involved in the agricultural sector participated in the workshop to think anew on the future of the AMB. Strengths and weaknesses of the AMB as well as the strategies and tactics that will enable the AMB to attain new heights were to be identified.

The AMB
It is recalled that the role of the AMB is to ensure a regular and stable supply of certain basic food products at an affordable price to the local market through either imports or local production. Statistics show that annually, AMB sells around 7 000 tons of onions, 7 000 tons of table potatoes, 1 700 tons of garlic, 1 300 of tons seed potatoes, 28 tons of garlic seeds and 450 kg of onion seeds.
As a regulator of and foremost wholesaler of controlled products, the AMB has traditionally played a significant role in the marketing and regulation of these products, most notably onions, potatoes, garlic and their related seeds. However, with the growing worldwide predilection for the liberalisation of these commodities and the entry of new players from the private sector, the AMB has had to face up to the reality of relinquishing its control over its conventional markets.
